A Tool to Deceive and Slaughter is a piece of artwork by Caleb Larsen that perpetually attempts to sell itself on eBay. From all outward appearances it’s a black acrylic 8″x8″x8″ cube with only an Ethernet jack. Includes a legally binding purchase agreement that requires the buyer to keep the device connected to the Internet to further its sole purpose, among other things. It does not say specifically whether the purchaser (”Collector”) is forbidden from disassembling it, but that might take the fun out of it.
Q: If I were to buy this, how long could I expect to own it before it sells itself again?
A: It is hard to say. Like any commodity it is subject to demand. It could be moments or years. The perpetual state of uncertainty and the instability of ownership are primary components of the work.
